Professor Jonathan Jeremiah Atungwu is the 9th Provost of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan, and the 28th head of the institution since its establishment in 1921. His appointment took effect on April 14, 2025, after a rigorous selection process supervised by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria.

The Federal College of Agriculture has produced tens of thousands of diplomates since 1988, when the nomenclature of the head of the institution was changed from Principal to Provost. This number does not include those who have participated in various agricultural trainings via our vocational studies.

Prior to his recent appointment, Professor Atungwu was a Professor of Plant Nematology in the Department of Crop Protection at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria. His academic pursuit as a plant scientist began at the College of Agriculture, Yandev, Benue State. He furthered his education at the University of Agriculture Abeokuta (now Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta), where he obtained his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees. Additionally, he obtained a Short Course Certificate (equivalent to a Master’s degree in Sustainable Agriculture) from Coventry University, UK, and completed a certificate course from China Agricultural University, Beijing.

Professor Atungwu’s research focuses on host plant resistance and organic pest management in tropical agro-ecosystems. He is a dynamic, enthusiastic, and optimistic individual driven by his passion for excellence, efficient resource utilization, and innovative ideas. He is one of the experts who pioneered the organic agriculture movement in Nigeria in 2005.

As an academic, Professor Atungwu teaches undergraduate and graduate students and has successfully supervised over 20 postgraduate students. He has been involved in curriculum development at both national and international levels. He has held various leadership positions, including Dean, Director, Deputy Dean, Head of Department, Coordinator, and Chairman of committees/panels.

Professionally, Professor Atungwu is the immediate past President of the Nigerian Society for Plant Protection (NSPP) and holds positions in several organizations, including the Association of Deans of Agriculture in Nigeria (ADAN). He is also a member of international organizations such as the International Society for Organic Agriculture (ISOFAR) and the International Society for Pesticidal Plants (ISPP).

Professor Atungwu has received numerous awards and commendations for his outstanding performances. He is happily married with lovely children and is known for his high ethical standards.
