A four-man team from the Federal College of Agriculture, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, on Tuesday paid an inspection visit to Coker Farm in Abeokuta ahead of the placement of students for their Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

The visit was initiated by the Provost of the College, Professor Jonathan J. Atungwu, who sent the team to assess the farm’s suitability for the students’ SIWES placement with particular attention to its facilities, learning opportunities, accommodation and security arrangements.

The inspection team comprised the Dean, School of Engineering Technology, Engr. Dr. Ayoade Atere; the Director of Student Affairs (DSA), Dr. Adenike Komolafe; the Head of SIWES, Dr. Oni O. O. and the Students’ Union President, Femi Arala.

The team was warmly received by the General Manager of the farm, Ms. Bidemi Adekunle and the Chief Security Officer (CSO), Mr. Uthman who took them round the farm to inspect its facilities. These included fully automated closed-house poultry pens, the farm store and accommodation facilities for both male and female students.

Speaking on the training opportunities available to the students, the General Manager said they would receive practical exposure and mentorship from the company’s Pen Managers and other relevant members of the management team while carrying out their assigned duties.

The placement will provide the students with practical knowledge of modern poultry production systems, closed-house poultry management and the operation of automated farm equipment among other aspects of commercial poultry production.

The inspection also gave the College team the opportunity to assess the accommodation and security arrangements at the farm. The management assured the team that the students’ accommodation and safety would be adequately provided for throughout their stay. The farm’s Chief Security Officer is a Civil Defence officer while CCTV cameras are also available across the farm to further enhance security.

The SIWES placement is expected to last for 16 weeks. During the period the students will be expected to conduct themselves responsibly, maintain good behaviour and uphold the image of the College.

At the end of the inspection, the Head of SIWES, Dr. Oni O. Oyeyemi, thanked the General Manager and the CSO for their warm reception and for taking the team round the farm.

The inspection is part of the College’s efforts to ensure that students are placed in suitable organisations where they can gain meaningful practical experience that complements their academic training.
