HND I AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING (POST HARVEST TECHNOLOGY)

PHT311 Heat and Mass Transfer (2 Units)

Heat transfer processes, The use and application of thermodynamics tables and charts, the use of psychometric chart, heat and mass transfer processes, the principles and operations of heat exchanges, the principles and operation of refrigeration plants.

PHT 314 Applied Fluid Mechanics (2 Units)

The principles of fluid mechanics and measurements of air flow properties to enable them apply such knowledge in the ventilation of agricultural produce in Stores and Silos.

PHT 313 Crop Storage (3 Units)

The principles and methods of crib storage and the skill required for the operation and management of crop storage systems.

AET 315 Rural Electrification (2 Units)

Electric circuit drawing, electricity generation, transmission and distribution electric motors and generators, electric installation.

AEP 323 Engineering Properties of Biological Materials (3 Units)

A practical study of the physical and mechanical properties of animal and plant products as related to their harvesting, processing, packaging and storage.

Stress-strain behavior, Newtonian an non-Newtonian deformation porosity, terminal velocity, coefficient of friction (60 hour lecture; 180 hours practical period).

PHT 321 Crop Harvesting Methods and Equipment

The principles of harvesting, cutting, the operations of cutters, the methods and equipment for grain harvesting, the methods of harvesting fruits and vegetables, the operation of forage harvesters, methods and equipment for root crop harvesting.

PHT 322 Primary Processing Methods and Equipment (4 Units)

The principles of crop processing, the working principles and operation of equipment for cleaning, separation, shelling and decortication, the principles and methods of size reduction operations, the working principles and operations of mixers, filtration equipment, sedimentation and centrifugation equipment.

PHT 323 Storage Structures (3 Units)

The designs of crop storage structures, Construction and maintenance of crop storage structures, the principles of farm stead planning.

HND II AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING (POST HARVEST TECHNOLOGY)

PHT 411 Crop Handling (3 Units)

Methods and equipment for crop handling and the methods of storage in transit

PHT 432 Quality Control and Loss Assessment (3 Units)

The principles and procedure for crop quality assessment, the criteria used in the grading of produce, the procedures for carrying out inspection and sampling of produce, sampling methods in produce stores, types of losses that occur at various levels of crop handling, methods and procedures for loss assessment, planning of loss reduction programs, nutrient losses I stored products, losses due to bacterial and fungal infestation of stored produce.

PHT 433 Crop Drying Methods and Equipment (2 Units)

The general principle of crop drying, methods of moisture content determination in crops, the methods of crop drying, drying systems and equipment, the use of fans in drying, calculations in drying process.

PHT 434 Packaging and Packaging Materials (2 Units)

The principles of packaging, the main types of packaging equipment and processes, various packaging materials.
